Macau Tourism Guide

Macau, the "self-styled Las Vegas of East" is regarded as the Special Administrative Region of The Republic of China. Macau, a charismatic but sleepy town of yesteryears has changed a lot. Maintaining its old charm of fortresses and churches, Macau has recently developed into a glamorous gambling city of Asia.


Thanks to its latest industrialization, Macau is famed as the richest city of Asia. Various industries such as textiles, electronics and toys and tourism has changed the destiny of Macau. At first Macau was inhabited by the people who were invaded by Mongols during the Southern Song Dynasty. But, only after 16th century when Portuguese traders arrived marked cards here, Macau has been turned into a major settlement. Macau is the first and last European colony in China. It has been ruled by Portugeese for nearly 400 years but on December 20, 1999, Macau became the Special Administrative Region (SAR) of China.


Under this, Macau has its own codified constitution called Basic Law. This law provides the region a high degree of autonomy, a separate political system, and a capitalist economy under the principle of "one country, two systems". People of Macau can enjoy their own executive, legislative and independent judicial power but except power in foreign and defense affairs. Macau has its own government, passports, visas, postal system and currency.
Macau which lies on the western side of the Pearl River Delta, bordering Guangdong province in the north and facing the South China Sea in east and south, is heralded as the world's most densely populated city to live. Geographical area of Macau has been divided into three regions namely Macau Penninsula, Taipa and Coloane island, and Cotai, a narrow strip reclaimed land between the two islands. Cotai is famously called as the "Las Vegas strip of the East". This area is popular for numerous glitzy casinos. Among all of them Venetian is the most famous one with its Venice-styled shopping mall with rivers running through. It is regarded as the largest casino in the entire world.
This harbour city has a mixed culture. Both, Chinese and European influence is prominent in every corner of the town. If you walk down through the streets of Macau, you would surely feel that you were in any European city. In every aspect of Macau's life, you will get the blend of both the culture marked poker. Be it language, cuisines or architecture. Cantonese and Mandarin is the most commonly spoken language of Macau. Apart from them, people also speaks Portugeese and English. Another specialty of Macau is its cuisines. Macaneese delicacies are an amalgamation of Portuguese, Chinese, Indian and Malay cooking style. Some of the most popular delicacies that are available in Macau are shark's fin soup, fried chicken, steamed fish and tofu prepared in several ways. Apart from local cuisines, food from all part of globe is also available in Macau.



Macau is an wonderful city to walk around. Embellished with several churches, temples, fortresses and various other buildings having Chinese and Portuguese architectural designs. One of the most amazing statue of Macau is Bodhisatta Avalokitesvara(known as kwoon yam in Cantonese) located near the sea and Sands Casino and MGM Grand. It is a Chinese deity but designed in European style.
Narrow alleyways in old part of Macau is also a must visit place. These alleyways are highly crowded due to several businesses and works. After visiting these overcrowded alleyways, if you want to spend some time in serenity than you must visit the beautiful gardens or heads to the island.
Another important tourist attraction of Macau is Macau tower. It provides awesome view of entire Macau city. Tourists can also visit Fisherman's Wharf to enjoy some theme park activities and shopping.
So, visit Macau at least for once and experience its multi-cultural heritage and state-of-art tourist attractions.
